Getting Started
Aurora allows you to create a song with up to 14 different tracks, each track having it's
own assigned instrument. We call these tracks layers, and a group of layers we call a
block of layers. Songs are constructed out of blocks which you can eventually piece
together into a complete song. It is often easier to work on song construction in blocks
which you can think of as intro, verse, chorus, bridge etc.
When the program launches you will be editing layer 1 of block 1, which by default is a
set of drums. Select Record mode, then press the Loop Play button in the bottom right of
the screen. Try laying a few notes by tapping on the grid. As the play cursor passes a note
it will sound. When the cursor hits the end of the grid it will loop back to the beginning of
the block.
Try changing layer and adding notes to a different layer / instrument. Experiment until
you have an interesting loop going.
Try changing block and creating a variation on the original block. You can even use
Copy and Paste to help with this task. Once you have several blocks you can try chaining
them together into a complete song using Song Mode.
You can add layer effects using Effects Mode or even jam over the top of your loops in
Play Mode.
Some of the more advanced features are initially hidden away to prevent you getting too
overwhelmed with options. When you feel confident enough you can make these features
available by selecting 'Switch to Advanced Mode' from the 'File' menu.
